Ophthalmologists
|
An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor (MD or osteopath) who has the training to perform a comprehensive medical eye examination and is legally and profession-ally qualified to diagnose and treat all eye problems. An ophthalmologist is a physician who has graduated from medical school with an MD degree the same as a family practitioner, a radiologist, a cardiac surgeon, or a brain surgeon. After receiving a medical degree and completing a one year internship, an ophthalmologist undergoes 3-5 additional years of training in the medical specialty of ophthalmology, the study of the eye and its related systems. Because of his medical training, an ophthalmologist examines the eyes in relation to the general health and condition of the body. An ophthalmologist is the only doctor and the only eye care practitioner with such medical training. An ophthalmologist provides total eye care for patients of all ages. Total eye care includes performing comprehensive medical eye examinations, prescribing corrective lenses, diagnosing diseases and disorders of the eye, and using the appropriate medical and surgical procedures necessary for treatment. When a visual problem occurs, your ophthalmologist will determine when corrective lenses or glasses are needed, and equally important, when they are not needed to solve your problem. No matter what the eye condition, if further examination, corrective lenses, medication, or surgery are necessary, an ophthalmologist is able to offer advice and treatment and give proper and complete care. We look forward to helping you make informed decisions about your eye care.
